June

June has two sisters she's never met. One died before she was born and the other is much older (they have different mothers).

June lives with her nanna because her mother has a whole raft of problems, including depression, anxiety, OCD, and a chronic inability to budget.

June herself is bipolar but refuses to be medicated and apparently they can't force her because she hasn't actually threatened to hurt anyone yet (and she's only young, and "maybe she'll grow out of it").

A new family moves in next door. There's a mum and a dad and a daughter and a son. The daughter is a couple of years younger than June and the son is half her age. June embraces the opportunities afforded by a captive audience, and spends at least half her waking hours next door. Nanna is glad the girl has someone local to play with and hopes the new family will be a good influence on her.

June's mother visits sporadically. In years past she has sometimes avoided visiting for nine months at a stretch. Nanna tries to be understanding and supportive, but there's no doubt that her daughter's inadequacies have contributed to her grandchild's eccentricities (to put it diplomatically). June used to get angry with her mother but now she's older she's more forgiving, especially since she can see her mother's making an effort to connect with her.

Nanna loves having June with her, even though the child is often rude and sometimes destructive. Nanna wishes she were 20 years younger so she could keep up a little better with the physical demands. Nanna just hopes she'll be around long enough to see the child through to adulthood, because goodness knows the child's mother isn't improving any.

June outstays her welcome with the new neighbours. She likes being there because nanna isn't around to tell her off, and they have all kinds of neat stuff like game consoles and a popcorn machine and a milkshake maker and a trampoline. She likes to direct the younger kids, but they get tired of her machinations and eventually assert themselves. June doesn't like being told what to do, so she has a spectacular tantrum and the parents tell her she's not welcome if she can't behave herself, so she goes home and sulks, and tells nanna the other kids smell and that's why she doesn't go there any more.
